Overview:
After World War 2, many things were changed in American society. From the Baby Boom, gender roles becoming more prominent, women in the work force, and conformity all molded the American 1950s.
5. In what ways were the 1950s a decade of conformity? And what were some of the challenges to the idea of conformity?
Following the war, people were expected to act a certain way. The Baby Boom came along and families were growing (and expected to do so). Almost all suburban families had the "typical white picket fence house". Men were expected to bring home the "dough" but women were expected to work, in addition to providing for the family in other ways. The Beat Movement emerged, an artistic movement that was against racism, conformity and materialism. Some movies such as "Rebel" also promoted anti-conformity. Sex was also viewed differently than previously when it was thought as "taboo", it was more frequently discussed.
